How to Plan for a Security System as You Build a Home

Building a home can certainly be a rewarding experience. However, after completing your home, the last thing you want is for it to be the target for burglary. And you certainly don’t want to have to rework your new home just to install a security system if you don’t have to.

If you’re building a new home, it’s important to think about installing a security system as you are in the building process. There are several things you can do while building your home to make the system the most it can be. Below are six ways to prepare your new home for your system.

1. Develop a system plan.

After purchasing your system, the next thing to decide is your home’s wiring plan. Take a look at your home’s floor plan and decide where you want to place your sensors, cameras and any wiring. Split your home into zones to keep your plan organized. According to Structured Home Wiring, homes can be split into 8, 16 or 32 zones. Also, some security systems come wireless, so if you’d prefer not to deal with wires, consider this option.

2. Install remote locking.

You might be installing door sensors, but it also doesn’t hurt to have some extra security for your door locks themselves. Instead of installing regular door locks, install locks with remote keyless capabilities. These locks can be opened with personal codes or your system’s Internet home automation panel.

3. Install motion-sensor lights.

When installing your exterior lighting, using motion-sensor lights is ideal. The lights themselves can deter burglars and the motion sensors will detect unfamiliar movement. Motion-sensor lights are typically inexpensive —starting at Rs.2350/-  and up—and are easy to install.

4. Install window break alarms.

When putting windows in your home, go the extra mile and install some window break alarms. These alarms can frighten burglars away if they happen to break your glass. Lifehacker writes that these alarms are inexpensive and provide an extra layer of security. The alarm will startle the potential intruder if they break the glass and will also draw attention from you and your neighbors.

5. Install smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.

It’s necessary to install smoke and carbon monoxide detectors in your home to alert you and your family of any danger in the home. These detectors are affordable and easy to install without professional help. Some security systems pair these sensors directly with the monitoring service, so authorities can be notified in case of emergency.

6. Build a home in the best area possible.

While your home will have a security system to protect you and your family, you can help yourself by doing something simple—building your home in a safe place.
